Director of Education Conductor of Lyric and Treble Choirs, Co-Conductor of Concert Choir Under Ms. Desmond's leadership, the youth chorus program has launched five levels of Kodaly-based musicianship classes. The education-based choirs have performed at RFK stadium, Carnegie Hall, with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, for the Jamestown 400th anniversary, and other events in the northern Virginia area. Ms. Desmond teaches general music and choir in the Fairfax County Public School System. She has also served as Satellite Program Director for Children’s Chorus of Maryland and Managing Director for the Fairfax Choral Society. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education (Flute concentration) from James Madison University, and a Master of Arts in Music Education (Choral Emphasis) from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Professionally, Ms. Desmond frequently accompanies and solos on flute in the Northern Virginia area. She has sung with the National Philharmonic Chorale and National Philharmonic Singers, and has performed vocal solos with this ensemble as well. Ms. Desmond conducts in-services and workshops on topics such as Musicianship Techniques in the Choral Classroom, From Singing Games to Music Literacy, information sessions on the Gordon methods for musical testing, and choral reading sessions at state music educator conferences. She has been guest conductor for children’s choral festivals in Ohio and Virginia, and the ACDA Virginia-All State Elementary Choir. She is Past President of the Virginia Organization of Kodály Educators and currently serving on a national level as an Eastern Division II Representative. Ms. Desmond is also a member of MENC and ACDA.
